The High Ridge Fire Protection District had its origins in 1941 as an all-volunteer force, relying on donations from the community to exist. In 1970 the district became tax-supported, and by 1973 six firefighters were hired to staff a single firehouse.
The HRFD covers an area of 92 square miles, serving the nortthern Jefferson County communities of Murphy, High Ridge and House Springs. The district has four firehouses; its professional firefighters are assisted by a dedicated staff of volunteers.
HRFD assists residents with car-seat and smoke-detector safety and understanding burning regulations, and it also provides tours of its facilities.
The North Jefferson County Ambulance District is managed by a six-person board of directors. The district serves a large area in the northern parts of the county including High Ridge and House Springs. There are 12 full-time paramedics and 32 part-time EMTs and paramedics on staff, using four ambulances to provide emergency medical services. District staffers also offer CPR training, a bike helmet training program and car seat safety checks. NJCAD provides tours of its facility and participates in speaking engagements at schools and senior centers.
