Save Mart Supermarkets opened its first store in 1952. The company is a privately held food chain headquartered in Modesto, Calif., and it operates stores throughout the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area under the names of Save Mart and S-Mart Foods. Save Mart s range of products includes bakery, dairy, deli, floral and frozen items. The company offers yard and garden supplies, plants, fresh-cut flowers and gift items. It also owns SMART Refrigerated Transport, a trucking firm that transports dry grocery items, frozen foods, ice and novelties to all Save Mart stores. In addition to transporting Save Mart s merchandise, the trucking firm works as an outside contractor for other retailers. Save Mart Supermarkets operates more than 80 stores.
